The EU Plastic Rules: What They Mean for Your Lids

The "Green Wave" of legislation is no longer a distant warning - it is a legal reality. In the EU, the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) already bans cups and lids made of expanded polystyrene, and requires every country to reduce the use of single-use plastic cups, including their lids. Sweden has gone further: since 2024, single-use cups with more than 15% plastic may not be sold there.

What that means for lids

Ordinary plastic lids are not banned in the EU today. But the direction is clear: countries must bring down the use of single-use plastic cups and lids, each with its own measures, and since 27 September 2026 vague green claims on packaging are banned outright. A cafe that switches early avoids being caught between tightening rules and a lid it can't talk about honestly.
